Exploring something new with a partner can be exciting, and it should always feel safe, respectful and mutual. That's where consent comes in. It isn't a box to tick; it's an ongoing conversation.
Talk first
Choose a relaxed moment, away from the bedroom, to talk about what you're curious about. Share what interests you, what you'd like to try and what you'd rather not. There's no wrong answer.
Agree on boundaries
Be clear about limits, the things that are off the table, and the things you might like to try slowly. Boundaries can change, and that's completely fine.
Choose a safe word
A safe word is a simple, unmistakable word that means "stop now". Many couples also use a traffic-light system: green for keep going, amber for slow down, red for stop.
Check in throughout
Consent can be withdrawn at any time. Keep checking in with each other, through words, signals and attention.
Start gently
If you're new to restraint, begin with soft, simple pieces, such as a satin blindfold or padded cuffs with quick-release fastenings, and never leave a restrained partner alone.
Talk afterwards
Afterwards, take time to reconnect. Talk about what you enjoyed and what you might do differently next time.
